Bat's of Wisconsin

Wisconsin is home to 8 species of bats, which play a vital role in the ecosystem by controlling insect populations and supporting biodiversity. Here's a quick overview of these species, grouped by their habitat preferences:

🦇 Cave-Dwelling Bats (Threatened due to white-nose syndrome)

  1. Big Brown Bat – Common and widespread; often roosts in buildings.
  2. Little Brown Bat – Once abundant, now severely impacted by white-nose syndrome.
  3. Northern Long-Eared Bat – Listed as federally threatened; prefers forested areas.
  4. Tricolored Bat – Small and delicate; also affected by white-nose syndrome.

🌳 Tree-Dwelling Bats (On the DNR “watch” list)

  1. Eastern Red Bat – Rusty red fur; roosts in tree foliage.
  2. Hoary Bat – Largest bat in Wisconsin; has frosted fur.
  3. Silver-Haired Bat – Dark fur with silver tips; prefers forest edges.
  4. Evening Bat – Less common; migratory and roosts in tree cavities.

⚠️ Conservation Concerns

  • White-nose syndrome (WNS) is a fungal disease devastating cave-dwelling bat populations since it reached Wisconsin in 2014 [1].
  • Bats are essential for pest control, saving billions in agricultural costs annually.

🛠️ How You Can Help

  • Build or install a bat house.
  • Avoid disturbing roosting bats, especially in caves.
